Sonu Khanal (Ph.D.) tiene más de 12 años de experiencia brindando liderazgo técnico en proyectos relacionados con el nexo agua-energía-alimentos, eventos hidroclimáticos extremos, inundaciones fluviales, sequías, inundaciones costeras compuestas, modelos estadísticos multivariantes, modelización por conjuntos, evaluación de riesgos climáticos y desarrollo hidroeléctrico. Su experiencia ha sido adquirida en el Institute of Engineering (IOE, Nepal), el International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD, Nepal), Practical Action Consulting (PAC, Nepal), el Instituto Meteorológico de los Países Bajos (KNMI), la Vrije Universiteit (VU, Ámsterdam, Países Bajos) y FutureWater.

Durante su tiempo en FutureWater, Sonu trabajó con métodos cuantitativos, modelos de simulación (SPHY, VIC, WEAP, SWAT, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS), sistemas de información geográfica (ArcGIS, QGIS) y observaciones satelitales. Tiene habilidades en el análisis de información hidro-meteorológica multidimensional utilizando R, Python y aplicaciones basadas en SIG. Además, tiene experiencia en el desarrollo de complementos para QGIS y aplicaciones basadas en R-Shiny para análisis climáticos e hidrológicos y gestión de bases de datos.

En el último año, se centró en estudios de riesgo de inundaciones y sequías en cuencas europeas, la operacionalización de la previsión probabilística de inundaciones en cuencas piloto con instituciones gubernamentales y la predicción de impactos de sequía en el rendimiento de cultivos y sistemas de suministro de agua utilizando técnicas de aprendizaje automático de última generación. Sonu tiene experiencia laboral internacional en Europa, Asia y África, y ha colaborado con clientes y socios como el Banco Mundial, el Banco Asiático de Desarrollo, gobiernos nacionales y locales, organizaciones de cuencas hidrográficas, fundaciones científicas, universidades y centros de investigación.
